Overview
Tax returns built around freelance life
Freelancing means irregular income, several clients and no employer deducting tax for you. Your Self Assessment return is where it all comes together, and where mistakes cost money.
We work through your invoices and bank statements, claim the costs of running your freelance business, and tell you what to set aside. Whether you freelance full-time or on top of a job, we make Self Assessment simple.
This service is for you if…
- You work for several clients or agencies
- Your income changes from month to month
- You freelance alongside a PAYE job
- You use your own equipment, software or workspace
- You are unsure how much tax to put aside
- You work through an umbrella or via platforms
What we do for you
What is included in our freelancers service

Online filing with HMRC
We file securely online and send you the filing confirmation and your SA302 tax calculation.
Deadlines and payments
We tell you exactly what to pay, how much, and when, including payments on account.
Accountant support
Ask us questions by phone, email or WhatsApp throughout, from a qualified accountant.
Know the rules
Key Self Assessment rules for freelancers
- As a freelancer you are usually self-employed and taxed on profit, not turnover.
- Put aside roughly 20-30% of profit for tax and National Insurance until you know your figure; we can give you a precise number.
- If you work through your own limited company, see company director Self Assessment instead.
- Payments on account can make your first January bill look much larger because it includes advance payments toward next year.
- Contractors working inside IR35 may be treated as employees for tax; we can advise on your status.

We worked with a few different accountants before finally settling with Accotax, and we’re really glad we did. Their team is great. Abdul is responsive and easy to reach whenever I have a question, which makes a big difference. They take the time to understand how our business works and what our needs are. They are very knowledgeable, and when they don’t have the answer straight away, they take the time to look into it and get back to us quickly. Anum, who looks after our account on a day-to-day basis, including reconciling invoices and preparing the annual accounts, is amazing. She is professional, efficient, and follows the processes we have put in place together. She's also very quickin getting back to us whenever needed. We’re very happy to work with her and hope to continue doing so for as long as possible. Overall, Accotax has made our accounting experience much smoother and easier. We see them as a long-term partner as our business continues to grow. I would 100% recommend them.Posted on Google![]()

From day one, they've made what can often be a complicated and stressful part of running a business feel straightforward and hassle-free. A special mention has to go to Anum, who has been friendly, incredibly responsive, and genuinely cares about providing the best possible service. No question is ever too much trouble, and she consistently goes above and beyond to make sure everything is dealt with efficiently. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend you to anyone looking for an accountant they can genuinely trust.Posted on Google![]()
