What happens if you miss a tax deadline?
HMRC charges an automatic £100 penalty if your return is even one day late, even when you owe no tax. After three months, daily penalties of £10 can add up to £900, and further charges of 5% of the tax due (or £300 if higher) apply at 6 and 12 months. Late payment brings interest and extra penalties at 30 days, 6 months and 12 months.
A simple reminder is far cheaper. Read our guides on late payment penalties, missing the deadline and appealing a penalty.
