Do I need to complete a Self Assessment tax return as a delivery driver?

Yes. If you are self-employed as a delivery driver working for platforms like Amazon Flex, Uber Eats, or Deliveroo you must register for Self Assessment with HMRC and file a tax return each year. This applies even if you only deliver part-time or a few days a week.

You must register with HMRC online by 5 October following the end of the tax year in which you became self-employed. Once registered, you’ll receive a Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) number to file your returns.

You can deduct allowable business expenses to reduce your tax bill, including:

  • Fuel and mileage costs
  • Vehicle maintenance and insurance
  • Mobile phone bills (business use portion)
  • Protective clothing or equipment
  • Delivery bags or equipment
  • 31 January – Online tax return filing deadline and payment of tax owed
  • 31 October – Paper tax return deadline
  • 5 October – Deadline to register for Self Assessment if newly self-employed Missing these deadlines results in automatic penalties.

You pay Income Tax on profits above the Personal Allowance (£12,570 for 2025/26) and National Insurance Contributions (NICs). As a sole trader, you pay Class 2 and Class 4 NICs depending on your profit level. Keeping accurate income and expense records helps minimise your liability.

You must keep thorough records for at least 5 years after the 31 January filing deadline. These should include:

  • All income earned from delivery platforms
  • Receipts for business expenses
  • Mileage logs
  • Bank statements Good record-keeping ensures accurate returns and protects you in case of an HMRC enquiry.
